Near-Graduates’ Ability.

NOC provides a 360 evaluation of near-graduates’ preparedness for internship.

NOC is an assessment for Learning and Curriculum Evaluation

~ The goal of NOC is to assess how our medical curriculum is preparing our medical students for internship and identify ways we can change the medical curriculum to support this transition ~

NOC 360 Evaluation of Near-Graduates’ Ability

Night-onCall (NOC) is a performance based simulation and a 360 evaluation that assess the following competencies in near graduates:
  • Communication
  • History Gathering
  • Physical Examination
  • Patient Care
  • Evidence Based Medicine through a literature search
  • Culture of Safety
  • Writing a written note
  • Clinical Reasoning
  • Hand off: Transfer of care to another resident
  • Oral presentation of a case to an Attending
  • Trust and professionalism
These competencies are assessed by having near-graduates complete a series of cases and activities that are typical of internship. Near-graduates receive a 360 evaluation of their competencies from multiple perspectives (standardized patient, nurse, attending and patient partner, librarian and faculty).
Raters use a behaviorally anchored checklist of items to assess these competencies. Extensive feedback is also acquired from the raters and faculty. NOC scores near-graduates on each competency by rater and case and provide the written feedback in a comprehensive report in the NOC app.

Near-Graduates’ Performance Reports

Near-graduates are provided a comprehensive 360 evaluation report that includes written feedback from the Standardized Patients, Faculty who graded their note, and Librarian on how well they performed their literature search.

Medical Schools receive these reports with a summary report of how well their students did on each competency, along with all written feedback. Medical Schools also receive their data back to conduct their own analyses.

If NOC is done every year, schools can examine change over time in each domain within our NOC application system.

For examples of the data provided to students and schools, visit the NOC app page here.

What can you do with this data?

This data can be used to help identify students that are struggling before they graduate. The reports provided detail of areas that Faculty can target during remediation.

Medical Schools can use this data for curriculum evaluation and assessment. The data can be used to evaluate curriculum and identify gaps, or areas that require improvement or focus such as teaching students how to perform a literature search.
